Shahn produced this broadside opposing the Vienam War in 1965. Shahn's cataloguer Kenneth Prescott recounts a visit to Shahn's studio in 1964, where "...[Shahn] showed me the original drawing, explaining that he was receiving contributions from those who sympathized with its sentiments, and that when he collected enough money he intended to have the drawing printed full-page in the New York Times...the ad, six columns and occupying about seven-eighths of a page, appeared in the Times on May 29, 1966." There was also a photo-offset version, of smaller dimensions, produced as a fundraising mailer for the pacifist group Messages For Peace.
